-- Time For Universal Data Plans?
theodp writes "Between multiple cell phones and their add-ons, high-speed Internet connections, and digital TV subscriptions, most households are paying for data delivery at least three times over, often paying the same provider twice. It's time for a universal data plan, [Cnet columnist Molly] Wood declares: 'I want to pay once for data, I want that data to be unlimited, and I want to be able to use it in any fashion I choose.' Still, she has hopes that the-times-they-will-be-a-changin': 'It's only a matter of time before regulators catch wind of just how many times we're being charged for the exact same thing.'"

sterlingda writes "A wind-powered car has been clocked in the US traveling downwind 2.85 times faster than the 13.5 mph wind. The definitive research by Rick Cavallaro of FasterThanTheWind.org is being funded by Google and Joby Energy. The run should now settle the DWFTTW (downwind faster than the wind) debate that has been raging for some time on the Internet about whether or not such a feat was possible."

-- Qualcomm Ships Dual-Core Snapdragon Chipsets
(http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/d34SESkovNk/Qualcomm-Ships-Dual-Core-Snapdragon-Chipsets)
rrossman2 writes "Qualcomm has issued a press release revealing they have started shipping their new dual-core Snapdragon chipsets. These chipsets run each core at up to 1.2GHz, include a GPU which supports 2D/3D acceleration engines for Open GLES 2.0 and Open VG 1.1, 1080p video encode/decode, dedicated low-power audio engine, integrated low power GPS, and support for 24-bit WXGA 1280x800 resolution displays. These chipsets come in two variants, the MSM8260 for HSPA+ and the MSM8660 for multi-mode HSPA+/CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Rev B. The press release also lists QSD8672 as a third-gen chipset like the two mentioned, but doesn't go into any detail of what its role is. With this announcement that they are shipping, how long until HTC makes a super smart phone?"

-- Mysterious Radio Station UVB-76 Goes Offline
(http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/4u3x3tlBSus/Mysterious-Radio-Station-UVB-76-Goes-Offline)
leathered writes "Tinfoil hatters around the world are abuzz that UVB-76, the Russian shortwave radio station that has been broadcasting its monotonous tone almost uninterrupted since 1982, has suddenly gone offline. Of course no one knows what the significance of this is, but best brush up on your drills just in case."

-- Quantifying, and Dealing With, the Deepwater Spill
(http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/0wGQWpMsaBM/Quantifying-and-Dealing-With-the-Deepwater-Spill)
Gooseygoose writes with a link to this analysis by Boston University professor Cutler Cleveland "Some reports in the media attempt to downplay the significance of the release of oil from the Deepwater Horizon accident by arguing that natural oil seeps release large volumes of oil to the ocean, so why worry? Let's look at the numbers." Read on for a few more stories on the topic of the Deepwater Horizon spill.

-- The Apple Broadcast Network
(http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/UxGslWUori8/The-Apple-Broadcast-Network)
Hodejo1 writes "In 1959 5,749,000 television sets were sold in the US, bringing the cumulative total of sets sold since 1950 to 63,542,128 units. This number supported, through advertising, three national television networks, ABC, NBC, and CBS (a fourth, Dumont, folded in 1956) and numerous local independent stations. Now here are another set of numbers. As of April this year Apple sold 75 million iPhone and iPod touch units, devices capable of delivering video via Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. Add to that figure 2 million iPads and counting. By the end of the year Apple should have about 90 million smart mobile devices in the wild. That makes a proprietary amalgam greater than what the TV networks had in 1959 and one that easily serves as a foundation for a pending broadcast network that will be delivered not through tall radio towers, but through small wireless hubs and the Internet. Call it the Apple Broadcast Network. iAd is how Apple plans to pay for it."

-- Microsoft Cancels Bing Cash-Back Program
(http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/R2laxBng8F8/Microsoft-Cancels-Bing-Cash-Back-Program)
pjfontillas writes "Yusuf Mehdi, Senior Vice President of Microsoft's Online Audience Business Group, has recently announced: 'One of the principles we have here at Bing is to constantly experiment and learn. We do this to ensure we are keeping pace with new social and technology trends, and can continue to deliver great value for our customers and advertisers. As part of this "test-and-learn" mentality, we will be retiring the Bing cashback feature, which means that the last day you can earn cashback will be July 30, 2010.' From the look of the comments, Microsoft has at least 35 saddened users. eWeek does a follow-up attempting to explain the situation in more detail."

An anonymous reader writes "The MorphOS Team has released version 2.5 of its PPC computer-only operating system. -- SpaceX's Falcon 9 Appears As UFO In Australia
(http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/ql6r5pl-k2g/SpaceXs-Falcon-9-Appears-As-UFO-In-Australia)
RobHart writes "ABC (the Australian Broadcasting Commission) has reported extensively on a bright spiraling light that was seen in Eastern Australia just before dawn. They have just broadcast a report from an Australian astronomer who has suggested that the light was probably the successful Falcon 9 launch, which would have been over Australia at that time on its launch trajectory."

Update: 06/05 22:20 GMT by T : Setting aside the literal exhaust fumes, reader FleaPlus says It's "interesting to look at the reactions from those in Congress who control the purse-strings for NASA (one of SpaceX's biggest customers). The successful launch was congratulated by Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL and former astronaut) and Rep. Suzanne Kosmas (D-FL), both praised and criticized by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) due to the successful launch being a year later than previously predicted, and blasted by Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) for merely replicating what 'NASA accomplished in 1964,' who added that the company's success 'must not be confused with progress for our nation's human spaceflight program.'"

-- Malfunction Costs Couple $11 Million Slot Machine Jackpot
(http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/9VpJbT00yRU/Malfunction-Costs-Couple-11-Million-Slot-Machine-Jackpot)
ainandil writes "Engineering mistakes, while frustrating, seldom definitively alter the end user's life. Not so in Cripple Creek Colorado — MaryAnn and Jim McMahon thought their money troubles were over when they hit an $11 million jackpot at a casino Tuesday. Before paying the jackpot, the Wildwood Casino turned the machine over to the Colorado Gaming Division for inspection. A glitch was found, aha! The Wildwood Casino blamed a slot machine malfunction for the $11 million jackpot. Total actually won by the McMahons? $1627.82."

-- Porn Sites Pop Up In China
(http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/KP9CJMT8UHQ/Porn-Sites-Pop-Up-In-China)
crimeandpunishment writes "It may only be a temporary glitch, but it's one that's providing some pleasure for internet users in China. Previously blocked websites, including ones with pornography, are suddenly accessible in China. The country has a long history of cracking down on online pornography. One analyst says it's far more likely that this is a glitch, not a change in internet censorship policy."

-- Does the Internet Make Humanity Smarter Or Dumber?
Nemilar writes "The Wall Street Journal is running a pair of articles asking whether the internet is making humanity smarter or dumber. The argument for 'smarter' is that the internet is simply a change in the rules of publishing, and that the bad material is thrown away; the second story critiques the 'information overload' aspect of the internet, claiming that we have traded depth of knowledge for velocity and span. What do you think? Does the internet make you stupid?"

-- Urine Test For Autism
(http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/_Vjyzmh-rks/Urine-Test-For-Autism)
An anonymous reader writes "Defining and diagnosing autism has been a controversial process — but maybe a little less so now. Children with autism have a different chemical fingerprint in their urine than non-autistic children, according to new research. The difference stems from a previously documented difference in gut bacteria found in autistic individuals. The possibility of a simple pee test matters because currently, children are assessed for autism through a lengthy testing process that explores a child's social interaction, communication and imaginative skills. Being able to identify the condition earlier and at a lower cost could leave more time and money for treatment."

-- Adobe Warns of Flash, PDF Zero-Day Attacks
(http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/2SImx-gcbsg/Adobe-Warns-of-Flash-PDF-Zero-Day-Attacks)
InfosecWarrior writes "Adobe issued an alert late Friday night to warn about zero-day attacks against an unpatched vulnerability in its Reader and Flash Player software products. The vulnerability, described as critical, affects Adobe Flash Player 10.0.45.2 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris operating systems. It also affects the authplay.dll component that ships with Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.x for Windows, Macintosh and UNIX operating systems."

-- Hardware Companies Team Up To Fight Mobile Linux Fragmentation
(http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/hkgkGMQMRsU/Hardware-Companies-Team-Up-To-Fight-Mobile-Linux-Fragmentation)
Nunavut writes with news that a number of hardware companies have banded together to battle the fragmentation of the mobile Linux market. ARM, Freescale Semiconductor, IBM, Samsung, ST-Ericsson and Texas Instruments are forming Linaro, a nonprofit organization that plans to focus on "low level software around the Linux kernel that touches the silicon, key pieces of middleware that enable new markets and tools that help the developer write and debug code."
"Linaro's chief goal is to reduce the time that it takes to bring a new ARM-powered product to market with Linux. This effort is largely neutral with respect to what software environment and components individual vendors choose to run in user space. Linaro will not compete with existing platforms such as MeeGo and Android. Instead, it will attempt to improve the shared underlying software components that allow those platforms and others to run on ARM SoCs. In principle, this could actually reduce fragmentation at the lower levels of the Linux stack."

-- How can I copy two or three songs from one music CD to another?

Question: How can I copy two or three songs from different music Cd's and save them on another thru my CD Burner? I tried but it seems like they use track as a name of songs. and if they have the same track as a name that causes the Cd burner to fail>Also, I am getting error message when trying to copy thru my Cd Burner>> Buffer error or running out.

Answer: Hello Michael,I Would Recomend you to download those songs to your hard drive, grab them with some of those CD-to-MP3 Programs (easy CD Creator or Audiograbber) and then try to burn them, try changing the name, I'm sure you wont get an error msg, I've done it a couple of times and it works for me (by the way, if your CD burner program doesnt convert automatically MP3 to WAV Download MPEG Suite)For the Buffer Error, try to close every program you got open, leave the computer just burning the CD. Reply Posted on 31/8/2002 Althouth the above reply will work its and awfull big job for a few songs, i would get a copy of ahead nero 5.5 and install it, as when u drag a cd file on to the project it automaticly puts it as a temp file on the hard drive at a hugly fast speed and therfore lets u add as many files from different cd's as is needed!!!
