Asked on 4/9/2002, 8:23
Im in the prosess to get a new hard drive
and will be getting one that has "Ultra DMA 33/66/100 Support" on my motherboard its says I have 2 Channel E-IDE (Mode 4 and Bus master Ultra DMA 33/66/100 Support)(Ultra DMA 100 optional)
What does it mean "Ultra DMA 100 optional"
how do I make sure I can use this feature

Hi Ray,

On most computers, when you connect a new hard drive, the DMA option will be automaticly selected by the computers BIOS (the componant of the computer that decides what everything does when you switch the computer on.)

If your new hard drive can support more than one DMA mode, e.g. 33/66 and 100, then the BIOS will pick the fastest one most likely.

If you plug your hard drive in and find that it dosn't work or it has selected a slow DMA mode, you should be able to enter your computers BIOS by pressing either the F1, F2, DEL, F8, F10 keys whilst starting up your PC. In there, you will be able to select the DMA setting you require.

NB: If your computer does select a slower DMA setting, there might be a very good reason why it has done so. In most cases, the DMA setting won't have a serious impact on the speed of your computer so if you arn't experienced in using a BIOS, it might be better to leave the automatic selection as it is.
