As you may be aware, the Internet is littered with adverts, questionnaires and marketing of all kinds all with the same purpose, to grab our interest in products and make us buy things. One sneaky part of advertising that we don't see is so called Spy-Ware or Big Brother Ware. These are programs that you inadvertently download onto your computer, perhaps with another piece of software that will then sit quietly in the background watching everything you do and sending it to the publishers so they can gather information on your computing habits and send you specialist advertising.

Ad-aware is a program that will remove almost all types of Spy-ware by scanning and reporting on what's on your computer. It will then give you the option to erase this Spy-ware.

The amount of spy-ware is vast, and you could have hundreds of spy-ware programs running on your computer. This obviously will cause your PC to slow down, maybe even crash. Eliminating spy-ware with Ad-aware can speed up your computer and correct many problems.

Ad-aware will function on all versions of Windows, but some users have reported problems under Windows XP. A special Windows XP version is expected soon from Lavasoft.

Winfold is a small utility which allows you to package directories up into single files and optionally making them auto executable for files within the directory or other files on the computer

Compression of the directory is as standard, which means that this utility is ideal for distributing directories easily and as efficiently as possible. Alternatively, you can store infrequently used directories in this format, ready to be used when you choose.

The ROX Desktop

ROX is a fast, user friendly desktop which makes extensive use of drag-and-drop. The interface revolves around the file manager, or filer, following the traditional Unix view that `everything is a file' rather than trying to hide the filesystem beneath start menus, wizards, or druids. The aim is to make a system that is well designed and clearly presented. It is based upon the RISCOS desktop, a revolutionary operating systen written by Acorn in the late 1980s and still in production today.

The main download is the Rox-Filer, as shown here, this is available for a number of different platforms and is the core of the system. There are also other programs available for download from the ROX site, such as a specialist window manager, session manager and a number of applications

Available as a download from here is a mirror copy of the ROX-Filer for Cygwin, which means ROX can run on a Windows system. ROX for Windows is a powerful combination and allows for a convenient graphical interface to Cygwin UNIX commands, the current Cygwin distribution is 2.1.2

Download Accelerator Plus is a utility which runs in your System tray, next to the clock. It is a download manager which speeds up and keeps control of all your downloads from Internet web sites.

Download Accelerator is enormously useful to users of Dialup Connections. On many older browsers (with the exception of Internet Explorer 6) when your Internet Connection disconnects you loose your download. With Download Accelerator, downloads pick up from the point you left off when you were disconnected.

Download Accelerator can be set up to work completely automatically with no user intervention so you can leave large downloads over night to tend to themselves or whilst you go out. Even if you are disconnected every two hours by your ISP, Download Accelerator will pick up the pieces and continue.

Download Accelerator makes not one but four connections to the server you are downloading from thus making full use of your bandwidth. Internet Explorer usually only makes one connection and will not use all of your available bandwidth.

Download Accelerator is compatible with all versions of Windows including .NET Server and Windows XP. Download Accelerator will even help Cable/DSL users to make full usage of their bandwidth but is most useful for Dialup Networking users.
